IMMEDIATE RELEASE

permit regulation of the US Army Corps of Engineers at a public hearing

in Omaha Thursday, Sept. 25.

Developed to protect water quality and the nation's rapidly dis-

appearing productive wetlands, this regulation implements Section 404

of Public Law 92-500, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments

of 1972.

The new regulation will require a Corps permit for any major dis-

ruptive activity on "navigable waters of the United States" and adjacent

wetlands. The authority will be extended gradually to cover tributaries,

larger natural lakes and eventually all "navigable waters."

Two public meetings will be held in the Civic Auditorium Music Hall,

Seventeenth and Davenport, Omaha, beginning at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.,

according to Brig. Gen. Philip T. Boerger, Missouri River Division Engineer.

Omaha, one of four regional sites, was selected as most convenient

for persons in the North Central states. Other sites are San Mateo, Calif.,

Baton Rouge, La., and Annapolis, Md.

At the public hearing, the background and content of the regulation

will be explained and then comments will be solicited. Written,statements.
