The release of <br />slared flood waters in excess of the conservatlOn and recreation pools <br />and above elevation 3.8.51 feet is planned so that. when combmed with <br />flows originating downstream from the dam, the capacity of the <br />channel will not be exceeded, Upon request of the Arkansas River <br />Compact AdminIstration, irrigation water for downstream water users <br />IS released through the outlet works in the base of the darn. This excavated area, averagmg 1:.1 feet deep, <br />liUed With water and formed Lake Hasty, the center of year-rOlmd <br />recreation. <br />John l\lartin Dam consists of a concrete gravitj. structure 1,644 feet <br />long and l:!u fee! high, and an earLhfill structure 2.GOO feet long. The <br />concrete gravIty structure contams a gClted spillway prOVided with <br />sixteen :lU feet by 6-1 feet tainter gates with their operating machinery. <br />There are earthen v.'ing dams on either side of the main dam. The <br />north wing dam is 3.RRO feet long, connecting to the earthfill structure <br />or the mall1 dam at the north abutment. The south wing dam is 5,807 <br />feel long and l'onnects to the south end of the concrete structure of the <br />main dam. A bitwninous-surfaced roadway, 21 feet wide, extends along <br />the crest of the north wing dam. main dam, and south wing darn. The <br />o\'erall length uf the struclure is 2.fi miles.
