<br />2 <br />1 (1) current operational practices at Glen Canyon <br />2 Dam, including fluctuating water releases made for the <br />3 enhanced production of "peaking" hydroelectric power, <br />4 and flood releases, have substantial adverse effects on <br />5 downstream Colorado River environmental and recre- <br />6 ational resources, including resources in Grand Canyon <br />7 National Park; <br />8 (2) the Secretary of the Interior (referred to as <br />9 "the Secretary") announced on July 27, 1989, the <br />10 preparation of an environmental impact statement to <br />11 evaluate the impacts of Glen Canyon Dam operations <br />12 on downstream Colorado River environmental and rec- <br />13 reational resources; <br />14 (3) Based on existing information and with infor- <br />15 mation developed during preparation of the environ- <br />16 mental impact statement, the Secretary will be able to <br />17 make informed decisions regarding possible changes to <br />18 current power operational criteria and practices for <br />19 Glen Canyon Dam and to take other measures to pro- <br />20 teet, mitigate adverse impacts to, and improve the con- <br />21 ditions of downstream environmental and recreational <br />22 resources; <br />23 (4) the substantial adverse effects of current <br />24 power operations of Glen Canyon Dam can be at least <br />26 partially mitigated by the development and implemen- <br /> <br />eS 2807 IS <br />
