FLOOD PLAIN
MANAGEMENT

~
-
-
-

WHAT [S BEING
DONE ABOUT FWODS?

A flood hazard survey was con-
ducted to identify major flood
hazard problem areas. Local
agencies concerned with these
problems were contacted and asked to describe the
location and nature of flood problems in their areas.
Many helpful replies were received. From these
replies a tabulation was made of the problems and
what would be needed to plan for their solution.
Further investigations are in progress on specific
flood hazard reaches in the Denver metropolitan area
to evaluate alternative solutions to problems and
recommended courses of action. These reaches include
Sand and Westerly Creeks on Denver's northeast side
as weU as Cherry Creek and its tributary. Goldsmith
Gulch. which is located in an expanding residential
area in southeast Denver. In addition. the effects of
potential future floods are being modeled on the
mainstream of the South Platte River as well as
many of its major tributaries. These modeling studies
are necessary to determine the extent of the flood
hazard prior to development of alternative solutions.

Flood plain land use is a major variable in flood
control planning and studies to determine the
character of land use, both present and future, are
underway or pro}:M)sed.
