Uncompahgre Valley Wetlands

3.10.1 Existing Conditions

Wetland surveys were conducted during September 1993 for the lower portion of the
Uncompahgre River, including a 600-foot wide corridor approximately 27 miles long.
The corridor begins on the north end of Montrose and extends to Delta. A total of 35
wetlands, encompassing 544 acres, were found within 15 reaches identified for the
Uncompahgre River and its perennial tributaries (see Figures 3-4 and 3-5). The acreage
for each reach is summarized in Table 3-17.

3.10.1.1 Reach 1

Reach 1 extends from approximately 250 feet south of the study area bOllndary to a canal-
outlet at the north end of an artificial lake located on the east bank of the Uncompahgre
River. Included within this reach are Wetland 1 (east bank) and Wetland A (west bank).
Both contain characteristics of atypical situations (gravel-mining operations), remnant
wetland communities, and undisturbed wetland communities. Wetland 1 contains
palustrine/ emergent/persistent (P/E/P) and palustrine/scrub-shrub/broad-Ieafed deciduous
(P/SS/BLD) communities. Wetland A is classified as a P/SSiBLD. A total of 16.5 acres
of wetlands occur within this reach with 8.6 acres of atypical situations.
