<br />~ <br />r_,:' <br />L'" <br />c; <br /> <br />....-.-/ <br /> <br />The Thompson Farm <br /> <br />'--- <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />We have completed our third and last year at the Thon~son Farm. The <br />whole 60 Acre farm irrigation system has been rejuvenated by the installation <br />of new concrete head ditches and a pump back system. <br /> <br />Earlier reports have outlined the construction but a more detailed <br />description of our work at this time may help farmers who are looking for <br />an easy operating irrigation system. <br /> <br />Consideration is given to the normal operating volume of water which <br />is delivered to the farm. In this case it was from one to three second <br />feet. An upper limit of the furrow volume in the soil is considered <br />about 12 gallons per minute, Therefore, if we take one second foot <br />(450 gal./min. and divide it by 12 we have about 37 ports in each set. <br />General practice is to divide the field into an even number of sets <br />having anywhere from 36 to 40 ports per set. <br /> <br />There are two basic methods of building these ditches with level <br />ports. One is to put the ditch itself on the level with drop structures <br />in between the level sections as seen below. <br /> <br /> <br />The other method is to make the ditch deep enough to hold the maximum <br />capacity below the outlets and put the ditch on a grade to fit the terrain. <br />Having used both methods at the Thompson Farm we would recommend the <br />latter where it is possible. <br /> <br />- 15 - <br />
