The bid opening

was supervised by Col. J. H. Hottenroth of Albuquerque, district

engineer for the U.S. Corps of Army Engineers.

Edward N. Sanchez, chief of the technical liaison office of

the corps of engineers, said about 250 persons were present for

the bid openings.

"This is the largest crowd I have ever seen at a bid opening,"

Sanchez said. There has been a great amount of local interest

shown in the project.

The bid by Hen,sel-Phelps was well below the government esti-

mate of $2,320,240. Other bids from Colorado companies include

$2,192,137 by Penner Construction Co. of Denver: $2,656,665, A. S.

Horner Construction Co. of Denver, and $2,856,000, Northwestern

Engineering Co. of Commerce City.

The bids ranged as high as $3,319,390 for this portion of the

dam and reservoir project, which it is estimated will cost $22,610,000

over-all.
