" <br /> <br />Congress, through the Colorado River Basin Project .4.ct of <br />September 26, 1968 (82 Stat. 885), authorizes the construction of <br />the project, con$i$ting of HowardsviIIe Reservoir near Silverton, <br />Hay Gulch Rese",,'oir 25 miles west of Durango, Meadows <br />Reservoir, 48 maes of canals and wnnets and a diversion of the <br />Animas River at Taft, halfway between Durango and Silverton. <br /> <br />Congress appropriates funds for advance studies. <br /> <br />An advisory team of state, federal, and local ofFICials considers <br />about 30 alternate plans for the project. <br /> <br />The Dejznae Plan Report, detlJiIing the new configuration of <br />Ridge'- 8asin and Southern Ute Reservoirs, is completed by <br />Deparanent of the Interior. <br /> <br />Endangered Species Act, non-deopardy opinion on Animas-La <br />Plata Project is issued by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. <br /> <br />The Fznal Environmental Statement is completed. <br /> <br />The Department of the Interior accepts a. cost-sharing <br />arrangement that calIs for state and local entities to pro.-ide 38 <br />per cent of the up-front funding. <br /> <br />The Colorado Ute Indian 'Water Rights Frnal Settlement <br />Agreement is signed. The Ute Mountain Ute and Southem Ute <br />Indian Tribes agree to drop claims on San JIUUI Basin streams in <br />exchange for water in the Animas-La PIi1ta. Project and about $60 <br />mlI!ion in economic devewpment funds. <br />Voters ,,'ithin the Animas-La Plata 'Water Conservancy District <br />approve their repayment contract. <br /> <br />Colorado Ute Indian 'Water Rights Settlement Act becomes law, <br />PoL 100-585. <br /> <br />Ute MounlJIin Ute and Southern Ute Indian Tribes pass <br />resolutions approving their respective draft repayment contracts <br />as-to-Jonn. <br /> <br />1 <br />
