Transportation Network

The region is served by Colorado State Highway 64, a
paved two-lane highway, between Meeker and Range1y. Less than
one mile of this highway will have to be relocated. No new roads
are anticipated to be needed nor constructed at the project site
nor in the service area as a direct result of the dam and reservoir
construction. There are no railroads in the area. The nearest
railroads are at the Co1o-Wyo Coal Mine, 20 miles northwest of Meeker,
and at Grand Junction. A small general aviation airport is located
near Range1y, three miles from the dam site. No scheduled airlines
operate out of this airport. No new railroads or airports will be
needed as a result of the reservoir construction.

4. Residential Patterns

The ranches and farms have located almost entirely in the
valleys of the White River and its tributaries because of the
proximity of water for domestic use and irrigation. Range1y has
developed as a typical small town, influenced to a major extent by
the oil and gas industry.

5. Health and Safety

The nearest health and safety facilities are located in
Range1y, the closest community. A 28-bed hospital (Range1y District
Hospital) is located in Range1y with an average occupancy of 7.4 per-
cent (12). An examination of the yellow pages in the 1978 telephone
directory shows there are at least five physicians, one dentist, and
an unknown number of nurses.

Law enforcement agencies in the area are the Town police
department, the County Sheriff's office, and the Colorado State Patrol.

11-33

, ~

l~ ~

-~
