Oil or gas has been produced from 12 formations rang-
ing from the Weber Sandstone of Pennsylvanian and Permian Age to the
Green River Formation of Tertiary Age and including rocks of Triassic,
Jurassic, and Cretaceous Ages (3),

The richest and thickest known oil shales in the world occur
in the Green River Formation, which was deposited in Eocene time in
three lakes in Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado. The richest and thickest
part of these depostts underlies 1,400 square miles of area, called
the Piceance Creek basin, between the Colorado River and White River.
This basin is adjacent to and southeast of the dam site (3), In
conjunction with the oil shale deposits, nahcolite and dawsonite are
found near the confluence of Piceance Creek with the White River.

Rio Blanco County lies outside the principal precious and
base-metal mining districts in Colorado. There are no known precious
or base-metals in or near the reservoir site although a small deposit
of uranium-bearing sandstone with a small amount of vanadium exists
at Skull Creek in Moffat County to the northeast,

II-13
