'. .,-", cO.~Ri) <br /> <br />INTIRIOR <br />Dews release <br /> <br />For Release November 12, 1981 <br /> <br />WATT ANNOUNCES OPTIONS FOR CONTINUATION OF CENTRAL ARIZONA PROJECT <br /> <br />Interior Secretary James Watt today made three tentative decisions on the <br /> <br />Central Arizona Project (CAP) that had been pending in his department for <br /> <br />thirteen years. <br /> <br />In a meeting with the Arizona Congressional delegation, Watt identified <br /> <br />"proposed actions" on the CAP dealing with water allocations, flood control <br /> <br />involving the Orme Dam or alternatives, and construction of the proposed Tucson <br /> <br />Aqueduc t. <br /> <br />Watt emphasized that final decisions on these increments of the CAP could, <br /> <br />net be made until Environmental Impact Statements are completed. <br /> <br />Watt distributed copies of the guidance memorandum he prepared for <br /> <br />Commissioner of Reclamation Bob Broadbent. The memo identifies and describes <br /> <br />how Arizona's CAP water is proposed to be allocated between Indian and <br /> <br />non-Indian users. The proposed allocations will be used in the Bureau's ongoing <br /> <br />planning and environmental study activities and will be formally "proposed" in <br /> <br />the Environmental Impact Statement now being prepared. <br /> <br />Broadbent said the decisions announced today "will definitely assist In our <br /> <br />public involvement activities. Secretary Watt has again demonstrated that this <br /> <br />Administration came to Washington to bring change to the Federal Government and <br /> <br />make government responsive to the people we serve." <br /> <br />(more) <br />
