ARTNIE

-

REAU OF RECLAMATIQN -
"
For Immediate Release

hoenix, AZ January 6, 1984
Bob Walsh (602) 261-4327

~ The Harquahala Valley Irrigation District (HVID) today signed a repayment contract

with the Bureau of Reclamation for construction of a distribution system to carry and
deliver water from the Central Arizona Project's (CAP) Granite Reef Aqueduct to district
lands.

The district, located about 60 miles west of Phoenix, is the fourth agricultural
entity allocated CAP water to sign a distribution system repayment contract. It was
the first to sign a water service subcontract, on November IB,1983.

Under terms of the repayment contract, the district will reimburse the Federal
Government for constructing facilities to convey and deliver Colorado River water from
the Central Arizona Project to about 32,000 acres of land.

The total project cost is estimated at about $27.6 million. The district will
contribute $6.2 million of this amount, with the Federal Government providing the
remaining $21.4 million. The Federal obligation will be repaid over a 33-year period.

Facilities to be constructed include 41 miles of main canals, 54 miles of lateral
canals, and associated structures. Equipment needed for operating and maintaining the
system will also be purchased.

Construction of the distribution system is expected to begin in April, and progress
in phases. The entire system is expected to be complete by December 1985.

Water deliveries from the CAP are scheduled to begin in late 1985. Portions of the
district are expected to receive water at that time.

The CAP will deliver an average of 1.2 million acre-feet of Colorado River water a
year to service areas in Maricopa, Pinal and Pima Counties. Of this amount, municipal
and'industrial entities have been allocated 640,000 acre-feet, and 12 Indian communities
have been allocated 309,828 acre-feet. Non-Indian agricultural water entities, such as
HVID, will share the remaining water on a percentage-of-available-supply basis. HVID's
share is 7.67 percent.

-30-
