MWSI Project
Phase II Conjunctive Use Summary Report - DRAFT

August 22, 1995

located adjacent to 1-25 as shown on Figure 10. A second water treatment plant would be built at
this location in conjunction with this second conjunctive use reservoir.

The collection system would include the collection piping within the well field and
interconnecting pipelines delivering raw water to the storage reservoirs as shown in Figure 10,
Collection systems currently exist in Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock, and Meridian and would be
utilized. Remaining systems currently pump directly to the distribution systems and collection
systems would need to be added,

The distribution system would deliver treated flows to the same water providers, Since
the water providers are located in a ring shape along the Counties' major roadways, this system
would "loop" the well field area with flow fed from either direction and from either or both
storage reservoirs.

These pipeline systems are extensive, and cover some significant terrain with substantial
topography, Booster stations would be required at various locations,

Interconnections with surface water systems would be made via a raw water pipeline
from the South Platte River near Roxborough Park to the two conjunctive use reservoirs, Treated
water connections could be made at a variety of locations. For example, if the DW system was
used to carry surface supplies for conjunctive use, treated water connections could be made
directly off the proposed transmission main at the DW's Highlands Reservoir and Pump Station
located near University Boulevard and County Line Road, and at the Lone Tree Reservoir and
Pump Station located just east of Quebec Street south of C-470, The water supply system
shown is an approximated system to serve this area. Further planning would certainly be
required to develop more refined solutions to effectively serve this area,

The advantage of a system which utilizes the existing well fields is first that groundwater
supplies being mined throughout this area would now be reserved with use only during drought.
In addition, this type of system utilizes the very significant investment oflhese districts in well
and collection system infrastructure, In this case, wells with a total capacity to produce over
72,000 acre-feet of supply already exist and can be utilized in the conjunctive use plan, In
addition, interconnections with surface water systems are readily available and deliveries in
either direction should be feasible using existing transmission mains.

For conceptual planning, this study assumes that raw water is diverted from the surface
water system to a conjunctive use reservoir, which is in the vicinity of conjunctive use demands.
A treatment plant at this reservoir would treat supplies from both the surface and groundwater
systems and would deliver treated supplies to meet conjunctive use demands or to repay
borrowed surface water supplies,

40
