tj ::..

'.
.

PRESENT WATER SITUATION

"

Forecasts of hydroelectric power generation during

the coming, summer are based on known conditions (current

storage in reservoirs, amount of water currently stored

in the headwater areas in the form of snowpack, ground

water conditions, etc.), on the assumption that normal

precipitation will occur during the remainder of the

forecast period.

The lowest rainfall and snowfall on record occurred

during the :winter of 1976-77, in some areas. While the

final situation is dependent on the precipitation in the

spring and early summer months, it is very unlikely that

existing deficiencies can be made up, in general, although

problems in some areas may be alleviated.

Of thw U.S. hydroelectric capacity serving the

Pacific No~thwest region, almost 60 percent is located on

the main st~m of the Columbia River, 16 percent is in the

Snake River Basin, 8 percent is in the headwaters of the

Columbia, and 7 percent is in the Puget Sound and other

coastal areas. Other installations are scattered

throughout ~he mid-Columbia and lower Columbia basins.

15

,I

. .~ "...

. .'~'"

t~':'~;~.~:~:~~4;,\~
~~;~;~~~i~{~&~
;:ill'~' ,Jl?,<ilI

i~

l"

~t
~;~1(;}1~ ...;: .,,<~;;' ':
""':(~N"':;':'_"'~'~

st' X,; ,-hl;.;,..i.;.:"';o, "" 'i
