<br />OMAHA-- An 8-month navigation season plus full hydro-electric power
<br />
<br />production were included in the operating program of the Missouri
<br />
<br />River main stem reservoir system recommended at a meeting of the
<br />
<br />Coordinating Committee held here today. The Committee also agreed
<br />
<br />
<br />to a March 23 navigation start at Sioux City for the 1964 navigation
<br />
<br />season.
<br />
<br />Corps of Engineers would adopt the Connnittee's recommendations and
<br />
<br />adhere to them in its operaticn of the main stem reservoirs.
<br />
<br />
<br />A review of accomplishments indicated that 1963 was a successful
<br />
<br />year. A storage gain ,of 2,3 million acre-feet was anticipated after
<br />
<br />fully meeting all water requirements. However, flows into the reservoirs
<br />
<br />above Sioux City were estimated at 20,9 million acre-feet compared with
<br />1962's above normal 30.3 million acre-feet of inflow.
<br />
<br />The Committee also considered other multiple uses of the reservoir
<br />
<br />system, including flood control, irrigation, water supply, recreation,
<br />
<br />fish and wildlife conservation, water quality and mosquito control.
<br />
<br />ActinG Committee Chairman Tamo I-laara said recommendations for main stem
<br />
<br />
<br />operations beyond March 1964 will be subject to review by the Committee
<br />
<br />next spring.
