These parameters are basic to <br />the understanding of the hydrologic system on NOSR 1. <br /> <br />In the summer and fall of 1977, seven coreholes were drilled on <br />, <br />NOSR i, primarily for resource evaluation. U.S. Geological Survey <br />personnel were on-site during the drilling of these core holes, collecting <br />samples and conducting limited aquifer tests. This aquifer'testing was <br />based on a two aquifer zone model for the Piceance Creek basin. This <br />model, based on information available at that time, assumed that the <br />groundwater system consisted of two aquifers separated by the Mahogany <br />zone. In addition to the limited aquifer testing, water samples were <br />collected and analyzed and two coreholes were temporarily completed to <br />allow monitoring of water levels above and below the Mahogany zone. Data <br />. <br />from this period of aquifer testing and sampling were reported to the <br />Department of the Navy by the U.S. Geological Survey on April 20, 1978. <br /> <br />In late 1977, jurisdiction over the Naval Oil Shale Reserves was <br />transferred from the Navy to the Department of Ener9Y (DOE). On June 22, <br />1978, TRW was awarded the contract to provide DOE with management support, <br />and en9ineering and systems engineering assistance for Phase I of the NOSR <br />predevelopment program. The first activities directed toward meeting the <br />Hydrologic assessment objectives under this contract were incorporated into <br />the late 1978 drilling program. This program was primarily intended to <br />complete the resource assessment on NOSR 1 and required the drilling of <br />three additional coreholes. Hydrologic data was obtained during the <br />drilling of these coreholes, an aquifer testing program was implemented, <br />and five additional coreholes were temporarily completed to allow the ,water <br />levels above and below the Mahogany zone to be monitored. Data from this <br />, testing program was previously reported to the DOE in Drilling/Coring/- <br />Logging, Final Report Naval Oil Shale Reserve No.1, December 15, 1978. <br /> <br />After the 1978 field program, all available corehole and aquifer test <br />data was evaluated. As a result of this detailed evaluation, it was <br />concluded that the groundwater system on NOSR 1 was much more complicated <br />than the two-aquifer model used in previous testing. The conclusion from <br />the data evaluation was that there are four persistent water-bearing zones <br />on NOSR I. Based on this new interpretation, a field program to test and <br />sample the four water-bearing zones was developed and carried out durin9 <br /> <br />2-2 <br />
