.

.

the regional economy, Within t.[,,,, A:,IR B"sins, at least, the problem
area lies generally between t.h3 ',,6th merioian and the Rocky Mountains
with the High Plains portion 0; let1ssr importance because streamflow
contribution is so small that there is Httle or no dependpnce on it
locally and therefore stn'ctures which can capture and hold the water,
for whatever pu rpose, are viewed favorably. Also, in thi s same climatic
zone are areas located to the north and south of the A;rJl( Basins that
there seems to be the most concern about depletion of streamflow.

A number of studies have been made, are under way, or are
proposed in this general area in regard to effects of upstream reser-
voirs upon downstream water yield, Some are or will be rather quick
apnraisals based on available data and oth~rs will be more netailed
involving collection of all sorts of relative data during a period of
years before conclusions are attempted,

a. Ten Basin Study

The largest undertaking is that wId ch the Soil Conservation
Service has planned in cooDcration with the U. S. Geological. Survey
to study ten creek watersheds; seven in T~x~G, two in Oklahoma, and one
in Arkansas. The study includes instrumentation, collection of data
for a number of years, and analyses at an 8stimat0d cost of more than
$600,000 in five years, ~luch of the instrwop.ntati.on is already done,
The study ereas are shown in the tahle b2low,

State

Basin

Creek

TexaB

San Antonio River

Brazos River

Calaveras
Escondido
Cow Bayou
Gr~en
Mukewater
Deep and Dry Prong Deep
Honey

Midr'le Colorado River

Trinity River

Oklahoma

Washita River
Caney River

Sandstone
Double

Arkansas

Arkansas River

Six Hile

This study is referred to in the paper entitled "Investigations
of the Hydl'ology of Small \~atersheds in Texas, II presented by Trigg
Twichell, District Engineer of the U.
