A conference, cu,Hod to discuss some of the aspects of water
needs and conservation in the State, orimarily in the areas of Dallas
and Fort Worth, was convened at Temple, Texas, February 28, 1956. It
was attended by representatives of the principal Federal and Texas State
agencies interested in water control and of Dallas and Fort Worth, Due
to concern for their water supply, the two cities asked for evaluation
of the effects of retardation structures and cons"rvation measures on
the streams supplying their reservoirs. Four watersheds were selected
for study.

(1) North Creek, draining into Bridgeport Lake, is one of those
selected. Rain gages will be installed and a stream gaging station
located near the mouth.

(2) Dry Elm Creek, tributary to Elm Fork above Lake Dallas on
which seven flood-prevention struetures are now in oporation, three
under construction, and one planned, was another selection, Rnn gages
will be installed and at least one reservoir ga"inl~ station placed so
that water entering, leaving, and lost from th8 rcs-'rvoir can be mea:sured.
A stream gaging station will be locat"d aL the mouth of Dry Elm Creek in
an effort to evallcate changes and effccts uf 13l'\d and water managem,;nt,

(3) Little Elm Creek, RllothGr of thE: U. S. G,olo~:Lcal Survey's
selections, would show the como,~rison b~tw,""n tl'r,,, V,d ~nd untreated
watersheds or lb0fore" e,nd l<1ft,~r" treatment,

(It) Willow Creek above Benbrook Res2rvc'ir, a tributary of the Clear
Fork, will give some indic3tion on the recharge of Trini~y sands ~nd
also '?;lve some comparison between treated and untr]i1t8d watprshed3. The
same studins Hill bo conduct'ld as on Dry Elm Creek.

The program will be spon30red by the State Board of Wuter
Engineers and financed by Dallas and Fort Worth matching funds with the
U. S. Geolo~ical Survey. Technical assistance probably will be pro-
vided by the Soil Conservation Serviee and the Corps of Engine2rs, The
program outlined is estimnted to cost $89,000 and may be much more, A
study continuing at least ten y:ar3 is nnticipated,
