Also included

are 43,000 acre-feet of water imported from the Colorado River Basin by

8 ,small trallsmountain diversions. The la'gest of these is t!1e b.dep~ndence

Pass (Twin Lakes) system which 1n!,orte an average of 33,000 acr&-feet each
year to the Arkansas Valley. The remaining systems divert an average of

10,000 acre-feet annually. All of the water diverted is used for irri-

gation with the exception of the Wurtz Ditch >later >Ihich is used for

municipal purposes by the ci ty of Pueblo.

Qualitv of water

The water of the streams in the headwaters region is relatively

pure. The amount of solids in solution, however, increases down the

Arkansas River from its source due to accumulations of salts from

return flows from irrigated lands and from solids picked up from the
soluble roCk strata along the tributary streams.
All water diverted for project use would be suicable for agricul-
tural and municipal use. Inc,,"l'8,sed application of \.ater to irrigable

lands in theproject area should result in greater l'eturn flOWS, but

the water which would be imp or ted would be of hig/l qual i ty. and no
injurious effects are expected.

Water reouirements

The consc1!;1ptive use of irrigation water over the 1911-19lj.4 period

was 1.52 acre-feet per acre. In order to deliver that amount of water

27
