(Th~ inspection revealed a growth on the interior surface
of the pipe which apparently increa"ed friction and reduced capac-
ity_ Chlorination of the water was started July 7, and by July 31
the delivery had risen from 92 cubic feet per second to 100 c_f_".)

Operation of eitl'II_' alld '"ltlnl/t groves

The 65 acres of citrus and 22 acres of walnut groves near La
Verne owned by the District and operated under the superyision
of the chief operation and maintenance engineer were reduced in
size thi" year to make way for new construction_ An area of about
8.5 acres was cleared of trees for the first expansion of the softening
and filtration plant facilities_ Normal operation includes cultivating.
pruning. irrigating. fertilizing. spraying. and dusting_ It was neces-
sary to do some light firing on three nights during the winter for
frost protection. Six trees died of quick decline as the disease made
its first appearance in District groves. Sixty-five young trees were
planted to replace nonproductive trees. A combination of late pick-
ing schedules and late rains caused a considerable loss of navel
oranges because of rotting and dropping of fruit before harvesting.
Total income from sale of oranges, lemons, and walnuts for the
fiscal year was $13,134.97. Operating expenses were $16,945_19,
including $2.738.62 for taxes, making a net loss for the year of
$3,810.22. The total net profit from the groves since beginning of
operation in July 1936 is $97,270.20.

Water softening IInd jiltratioll pla."t

The water softening and filtration plant operated continuously
without shutdown, during the entire fiscal year 1947-48_ Because
the increased demand for water required operation of the plant for
58 days at flows greater than the presellt designed capacity of 100 .
million gallons per day, it. w~." llPr.p~~ary to discontinue the normal ,
practice of partial lime treatment for part of this period due to
inadequate clarification ill the settling basins and consequent over-
loading of the filters_ During the period" of lime shutdown only
