~'j7C

32

METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT

Work was completed on an automatic shutoff mechanism at thc
outlet of Hollywood tunnel. This device is designed to shut off the
flow into the Santa Monicll feeder in case of a break in the cast-iron
pipe below the tunnel. The installation was started during the pre-
vious fiscal year, but had been delayed due to the 1I0ndelivery of
essential parts_
A comprehensive inspection of all distribution system meters
was carried out. Major repairs were found necessary to the meters
at Spadra and at the Bristol Street connection in Santa Ana. Neces-
sary adjustments to frequency sensitive apparatus were made in
areas where the Southern California Edison Company changed the
power frequency from 50 to 60 cycles. Changes were necessary at
the south end of the Palos Verdes feeder. on the Orange County
feeder alld at Morris reservoir_ The pedestal for the Glendale meter
at Glenoaks Boulevard and Glendale A venue was moved a few feet
by a private contractor, for and at the expense of the Richfield Oil
Company, in order to improve access to a gasoline service station.
A compound meter was installed at the Union Oil outlet in Fuller-
ton, replacing the original installation_ The two float wells in the
Eagle Rock structure were replaced with a heavier installation. A
transite house was built over the E!xposed meter structure Routh
of the Eagle Rock tower 011 the Palos Verdes line. A sump pump
and air vents were fabricated and installed in the meter vault at
Lake Mathews. Vents and ladders were fabricated and installed in
the meter structures previously installed at Torrance and Anaheim_
The pump supplying water for domestic use and fire protection
at Lake Mathews failed on July 17. 1947, due to worn-out shafting
and was repaired and put back into working order by District
employees_ During April, May and .June 1948, the shores of Lake
Mathews were cleaned to elevation 1360 feet to provide for a live
storage of 102.000 acre feet. It was also necessary to grade new,
higher patrol roads on both sides of the lake_ .
A leak of approximately 15 gallons per minute was discovered on
February 13. 1948 on the Orange County feeder just below the
Corona Del Mar reservoir. The leak was due to faulty collar grout-
ing on the upper half of the collar. Repairs were made by cleaning
out the collar and dry packing with cement. A small leak on the
upper feeder near Fontana was repaired by grouting the joint.
Repair was made during lViarch i948 to a ieak in the 21-inch con-
crete by-pass line north of the outlet tower at Corona Del Mar
reservoir by calking and pouring a reinforced concrete collar around
the pi pe.
