<br />\ <br />j <br /> <br />, <br />I <br />I- <br />" <br /> <br />'i <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />- .....~ .. <br />i.,'. ~.J <br /> <br />CHAPTER 1 <br /> <br />OPERA TION AND MAINTENANCE <br /> <br />MAIN AQUEDUCT <br /> <br />THE Intake pumping plant on the California shore of Lake <br />Havasu. approximately two miles upstream from Parker Dam, <br />is the intake of the Colorado River aqueduct. The aqueduct <br />system is made up of the main aqueduct and the distribution facili- <br />ties in the coastal area consisting of reservoirs, pipe lines. and <br />water softening and filtration plant. The main aqueduct terminates <br />242 m-iles from Intake in Lake Mathews, which is the beginning <br />of distribution. Included in the main aqueduct are the five pumping <br />plants. the 230-kv transmission line bringing power from Hoover <br />Dam, the telephone lines, the reservoirs, tunnels, canals, cut-and- <br />covel' conduits, inverted siphons. paved branch roads from main <br />highways to camps, and unpaved patrol roads. Construction of the <br />principal features of the main aqueduct was completed late in 1939 <br />and Colorado River water was first received at Lake Mathews on <br />November 2, 1939. <br />The original cost of the main aqueduct. the cost of additions and <br />betterments. and the net construction cost as of June 30, 1948 are <br />shown in table 2. These costs include preliminary organization and <br />surveys. right of way and lands, construction utilities. Parker Dam <br />and District share of the power plant, and subsequent additions and <br />betterments charged to capital account. The net cost is after the <br />deductions given in the table. <br /> <br />Trm1HUl.1":;sion lines (old telephone s1J~terrt <br /> <br />There were no unscheduled interruptions of power due to causes <br />originating on the District system_ Faults on systems connecting <br />to the District system caused seven interruptions of pumping. <br />Interruptions and repairs of the telephone system for the year <br />were normal in number and extent. <br /> <br />Pllmping plants <br /> <br />Pumping at Hayfield was discontinued from July 31 to Novem- <br />ber 30. 1947, to permit further grouting operations in San Jacinto <br />tunnel. Pumping was resumed on the latter date and continued with <br /> <br />[9 ] <br />
