RecogniZing this, the cultural
resources program, implemented by the
Upper Colorado Region, concentrates on
providing the planning and construction
branches with the necessalY data on
cultural resources to minimize any adverse
effects of Reclamation projects, Inhouse
and contract surveys are conducted to
locate, test and evaluate the resources
and, if necessary, data recovery IS under-
taken through contract to mitigate major
project impacts,

The initial stage of location and evaluation
of the data is accomplished inhouse as
well as by contract. The Grand Junclion
Projects Office, the Utah Projects Office,
and the Cortez Construction Office have
archeologists. This provides the avenue
to integrate the management of cultural
resources with the overall goals of tile
Bureau of Reclamation.

Three projects, under Executive Order
11593, deal with surveys of tile Bonneville
and Vernal Units of the Central Utah Pro-
jects and the Provo River Project. Excavation
has provided the archeologists with the data
and artifacts to Interpret the Anasazi - the
prehistoric people of the area. The DAP
personnel will have recovered information
from more than 200 sites within the project
boundaries by the close of the 1984 field
season The finai reports are due in 1986.

These cultural resources belong to the
people.
