Turbines, turbine
governors, generators, main control boards, transformers, switches,
and much of the other electrical equipment for the powerplant and
switchyard are being fabricated and will be stored either at the
manufacturers' plants or on the project until the completion contract
can be awarded and a need for the equipment arises.

Specifications are being prepared for rehabilitating three
reaches of Colorado Highway No. 133 adjacent to paonia Dam and Res-
ervoir near Paonia, Colorado. The Bureau of Reclamation will contract
for performance of earthwork and slope stabilization for the roadway,
and Colorado Department of Highways will place the bituminous road
surfacing. This work should substantially reduce the extraordinary
maintenance problem that has confronted the Highway Department since
the dam was built.

Contractor operations are on schedule at Silver Jack Dam
of the Bostwick Park Project near Montrose. The outlet wo~cs and
spillway stilling basins have been dewatered and concrete placing
operations are underway. The contractor has elected to perform only
limited earthwork on the dam this year, because of weather delay this
spring and need to do some spillway work prerequisite to fill place-
ment. This season's construction effort will be directed toward
completing concrete work for the outlet and spillway structures.

Preparations are underway to plug two old wells in the
White River and Piceance Creek areas near Meeker that now discharge
salt impregnated water into Colorado River tributaries. The work is
the first step in an extensive program to improve water quality
throughout the Colorado River Basin. Contractor for the well plugging
will be the Willard Pease Drilling Company of Grand Junction, Colo-
rado, on a bid price of $52,886. The Federal Water Pollution Control
Administration and the Bureau of Reclamation are conducting a search
for otl~r sources of high saline pollution in the Colorado River
Basin. Appropriate additional measures will be instituted to reduce
pollution from all sources.

,ti
