IS

081950

Wildlife

Importance '
51. Several species of big game, upland game, waterfowl, and fur
anilrals occur in, for the most part, small populations on the Eagle-
Arkansas project area. The habitat for all wildlife species is good,
however, and is capable of supporting larger populations. Military
trainiDg activities from nearby Camp Hale are a disturbing factor in
the wildlife environment and are at least a partial cause for the
limited numbers of game animals. Generally speaking, hunting in the
future is expected to increase in keeping with the trend which indi-
cates a steady increase in numbers of hunters. Utilization of fur
an:lmalswill be determined largely by the demands of the :fur trade.
S1ll'llIIIary of effects
52. Although the effects of the project on most species of wild-
life will be insignificant, a reduction of streamflows will decrease
the amount of beaver and waterfowl habitat, In addition, the proposed
reservoir will inunda,te several miles of occupied beaver habitat at
and upstream from Homestake Lake and will have an adverse effect on
waterfowl nesting areas.
53. The :Improvement of old roads and the creation of new ones
from construction activity will permit easier access by hunters and
greater utilization of gBJlle resources, although as long as game popu-
lations continue at their present low density, it is not likely that
many additional hunters will be attracted to the area.

,;'
