UMB

PROGRAM STEPS (See Appendix II for additional discussion on Program
steps)

Site Selection:

The flooded bottomlands inventory resulted in an initial laundry
list of 57 bottomland sites for the Upper Colorado River Basin (25
for the Green and 32 for the Colorado/Gunnison; report due December
15, 1994; refer to FY 94 proposal #23). The inventory, scoring,
ranking, and selection of sites was accelerated so that hydrolgy
9ages could be installed prior to 1994 spring runoff, and so that
sites could be visited and screened for contaminants, hydrology,
geomorphology, and biology during 1994. We could not visit and
screen all 57 sites during 1994, so the sites were scored and ranked
to come up with a manageable number. Eventually all 57 of the
inventory sites may be visited. The sites (including the original
five sites: Moab Slough, Old Charley Wash, Escalante Ranch, Gravel
Pit at 29 5/8 Road, and Escalante State Wildlife Area) were scored
and ranked based on criteria which could be gleaned from available
information (e.g., photos, maps, etc.). In the Green River,
criteria used to rank sites included distance downstream from the
razorback spawning area; floodability (i.e., site was flooded during
June 1993); whether or not the site is part of a network of sites
(versus isolated); and property ownership (public versus private).
In the Colorado River sub-basin, criteria used to rank sites
included proximity to recent (since 1974) captures of razorbacks;
floodability (i.e., site was flooded during June 1993); whether or
not the site is part of a network of sites (versus isolated); and
property ownership (public versus private). Following are the
initial sites that were selected for screening in 1994 (listed from
upstream to downstream; not in priority order), and including the
original 5 sites:

Green River (note: spawning site located at RM 311.5)
I. Escalante Ranch; RM 304-306; private; contaminants
concerns; on hold.
2. Escalante to Jensen; RM 302-303; private.
3. Little Stewart Lake; RM 296-297; private.
4. Baeser Bend; RM 271-273; private.
5. Brennan Bottom; RM 262-265; private.
6. Leota Bottom; RM 254-261; federal.
7. Sheppard Bottom $-3; RM 252; federal.
8. Old Charley Wash; RM 250-252; federal; being evaluated.
9. West Branch; RM 243-247; federal; access denied; on hold.
10. Tia Juana Bottom; RM 243-244; federal; access denied; on
hold.
II. Pariette Draw; RM 239-241; private; access denied; on hold.

8
