oC

VI. Study Methods/Approach:

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Provo Area Office has been called
upon to repair the outlet control structure, and to install a fish
kettle. To identify and resolve any potential problems, a thorough
inspection and repair of all structures and screens will be
conducted prior to the onset of 1995 spring runoff, and the fish
kettle will be installed and tested.

Old Charlie will be dry prior to spring runoff. During runoff,
water will be allowed to fill Old Charlie through the water control
structures. In low to moderate flow years, fish screens will
prevent all but the smallest fishes from getting into the site. In
high flow years, the river will overtop the banks, allowing fish of
all sizes into Old Charlie.

During the spawning and larval drift season, larval razorback
suckers will be captured from the Green River and stocked into Old
Charlie. Larvae will be captured over a variety of dates and
locations, to help ensure that they are genetically representative
of the adult spawning population.

If 1995 flows do not overtop the banks of Old Charlie, fish sampling
will be conducted to evaluate effectiveness of the fish control
structures. The sizes of the fishes collected will determine
whether the structures are working to prevent access of larger
fishes while permitting access of smaller fishes (including drifting
razorback larvae).

Physical, chemical, and biological conditions will be monitored
throughout the season, to ensure adequacy for sustaining razorback
larvae. In the fall, Old Charlie Wash will be drained. If the
structures work properly, no fishes will escape into the river
during the draining process. All fishes are expected to drain into,
and be harvested from, the fish kettle. All nonnative fishes
harvested will be disposed of (subject to approval of UDWR). All
endangered fishes harvested will be held, genetically fingerprinted
(if a technique is available), PIT-tagged, and stocked into the
Green River (subject to approval by the Recovery Program). All non-
endangered native fishes harvested will be stocked into the Green
River.

VII. Task Description (FY 95):

1. Inspect all structures and repair where necessary; install and
test fish kettle.

2.

Allow Old Charlie to fill.
various locations along the
site.

Capture wild razorback larvae from
Green River and stock them into the

3
