oc

Old Charlie Wash is a bottomland site that has been restored as a
nursery habitat for the razorback sucker. It has inlet and outlet
water control structures, and fish screens which allow access of
small fishes but prevent access by larger fishes (so that larval
razorbacks residing in Old Charlie will have a chance to outgrow
their cohabitant fish predators). Unfortunately, there were
problems with the old outlet structure during 1993, and larger
fishes had access to the site. Also, when the site was drained in
the fall, holes were found in the structure through which fishes
(including razorbacks) may have escaped during draining. Therefore,
repairs to the structure will be necessary. A fish kettle will also
need to be installed, to facilitate the harvest of fishes during
fa 11 dra i n i ng.

Goal

To provide floodplain nursery habitat for rearing young razorback
suckers.

Obiectives

1. Repair water and fish control structures; install a fish
kettle.

2. Capture and stock razorback larvae into Old Charlie.

3. Evaluate operation of structures.

4. Evaluate use of Old Charlie for rearing larval razorbacks.

IV. Description of past performance on this or similar projects:

Old Charlie Wash has been developed and fitted with inlet and outlet
water control structures and fish screens. During 1994 the site was
allowed to fill with water during spring runoff, but larger fishes
got into the site through the old outlet structure. Larval
razorback suckers were captured and placed into the site, but none
were recaptured during draining of the site in October. It is
possible that razorbacks escaped from the site through holes found
in the outlet structure during draining. Conditions at the site
were monitored throughout the season, and appeared to be favorable
for rearing of razorbacks.

V.
