~&

VI. study Methods/Approach

1. Identification and evaluation of options for hydrologic
restoration.

Based on aerial photos, site visits, surveying, and HEC-2
modelling, options will be identified for hydrologic and
geomorphologic restoration of selected sites. Input from
hydrologists, fluvial geomorphologists, and hydraulic engineers
will be solicited to evaluate various options. Factors
considered will include hydraulics, floodability/drainability,
erosion and deposition potential, and effects of restoration on
channel stability. Cost estimates will be developed for
options considered most promising.

2. Restoration of hydrologic regime at selected sites.

Based on input from hydrologists, fluvial geomorphologists, and
hydraulic engineers, sites will be configured to permit
flooding over the desired range of flows, beginning in FY 95.
Some sites will be restored to flood and drain naturally; other
sites will be fitted with inlet and/or outlet control
structures.

3. Evaluation of results.

Beginning in FY 95, sites will be monitored to determine if the
site floods and drains at the desired flows, and to determine
if the site and adjacent main channel remain stable (in terms
of changes in topography, sediment deposition, bank erosion,
etc.). To determine if site hydrology and geomorphology
changes over time as a function of flow and sediment,
topographic contour maps will be developed for each site as a
baseline.

VII. Task Description (FY 1995)

See "VI. Study Methods/Approach" above.

VIII. Study Schedule

Task 1. Evaluation of options

1994-1996

Sites being considered for design/restoration will be visited
to evaluate options identified in conceptual management plans.

3
