UM~

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Contaminants

The objectives of the contaminants portion of the Program are to:

I) determine what constitutes a "contaminants problem". Research
will be conducted to identify levels of contaminants that adversely
affect razorback suckers, to be used as screening criteria.

2) determine if there are contaminants problems at candidate
restoration sites that may negatively affect razorback suckers; or
that may preclude acquisition of an interest in a property (because
of federal mandates).

HvdroloQv/GeomoroholoQv

The goal of the hydrologic/geomorphologic component of the Program
is to restore the historical frequency, duration, timing, and extent
of flooding at selected sites and river segments, in a manner that
will not adversely affect main channel stability or site topography.

BioloQV

The goal of the biologic component of the Program is to identify and
attempt to control factors which adversely affect survival and
growth of young razorback suckers which drift into, or are placed
into, restored bottom land habitats. Control of predation will be
emphasized, but other factors will also be considered (e.g., winter
kill, summer kill, food supply, contaminants, etc.). Biology will
be a consideration during all phases of the Program, especially the
evaluation phase.

Land Acquisition

The purpose of the land acquisition component of the Program is to
negotiate agreements with the landowners to allow restoration of
sites for use by razorback suckers. In cases where the site is
located on federal or State land, the agreement may need only to be
verbal. For sites located on private property, written agreements
will be sought which allow restoration and evaluation prior to
acquisition of fee title. Various alternatives will be explored to
avoid acquiring interests in properties that may not benefit the
razorback sucker. The acquisition component will come into play
after screening, prior to site restoration.

12
