n8nssn

.

.

PARTVL IRRIGATED AREAS

.

hrigated areas in the San Juan and Navajo river basins were identified

through inspection of aerial photographs obtained from the Water Commissioner

for Districts 29 and 77. The photographs are from the U.S. Department of Agri-

culture-Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), and were

flown primarily in 1956 and 1960. The photograph scales vary, but are approxi-

mately I inch to 660 feet. In areas not covered by the aerial photography, ortho-

photoquads obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey were used to identify

irrigated areas. Total irrigated acreages obtained from the photos and quads

were verified with totals obtained from the Water Commissioner for each river

reach or tributary of the San Juan River. Approximately 13,100 acres are irri-

gated in the San Juan River basin upstream of, Navajo Reservoir.

.

.

.

A summary of irrigated areas for each river or tributary of the San Juan

River is listed in Table 3. The acreages included some timber and range areas

that receive irrigation water on a periodic basis for the improvement of range

pasture grass.

.

.

.

.

-14-

.

-,j; ,',,",
