The economics of grazing, mining, recreation, tourism,

agriculture and manufacturing are some of the major economic
factors being studied.

<

Cultural Resource Inventory

Archaeologists have accomplished a sampling process in which
about 2 percent of the desert was inventoried. Using this
data and information from other surveys by the BLM and other
institutions coupled with literature searches, cultural resource

probability and sensitivity maps are being developed.

Geology/Energy/Minerals
Likewise a probability map is being developed for mineral

resources.

Vegetation

The vegetation of the desert has also been inventoried using

computer interpretation satellite imagery, aerial photographs

and ground truthing.. Also about 1000 transects have been walked

by staff botanists. Special contracts have been awarded for

additional inventories, literature searches and purchase of

private floristic studies.

.

Soils

Closely related to vegetation is soil and water. Field soil

surveys are being completed in sample areas both by contract

and have been intensively studies by field personnel in selected

areas by BLM personnel.

C-14
