<br />The Oontinental Divide tunnel extends from the easterly end of GrandLllke
<br />to Wind her, southwest of Estes l'lI.rk, with an azimuth of 242- 2()' 30", aItd
<br />l,ngth 0 69.023 feet. It is to be horseshoe shape 9.5 !'eet' in diameter and
<br />lined t oughout with a 9-inchconcrete lining.

<br />It ill be located entirely in pre-Oambrian rock consisting of the Longs
<br />Peak and related granites and the gneisses and schists of the Ids.llo Spr~ngs
<br />formatio. The granites are strong massi'Ve rocks. Gneisses predomillllotil' over
<br />schists nd only a small proportio%). have praninent and,continuouscleaV$ge
<br />planes. The proportion of granite t'o gneiss and schist is approximately 4 tolo

<br />Fro a detailed geological survey of the tunnel and, comparing it with con-
<br />ditione ctuallyencountered in the Moffat Railroad tunnel, whioh was built
<br />under th Oontinental Divide for the Denver & Salt Lake Railroad, and ahout25
<br />miles du south of this one. it was estimated there woUl.dbe only 400 fe~t cf
<br />bad gro and 5,200 feet of grcund needing support. However, fot purpo'ses of
<br />estimat, it was figured there would be 6,900 feet of bad ground and 17,500
