The major sources of surface water are concentrated along the eastern
and western rims of the region. The vast interior portion is extremely limited in
available surface water.
Water in the region not used for managed purposes is consumed on wetlands or
evaporated in terminal lakes or sinks. Meeting projected needs will require more ef-
ficient use of the available water supply and/or additional imports to the region. The
availability of the supply, particularly surface water, often does not coincide with
the need. Snowmelt causes streamflows to be high during the spring months, but
peak demand for many uses, such as irrigation, occurs in the late summer and early
fall when streamflows are generally lowest. Total runoff from year to year also varies
widely. Additional storage is needed to regulate streamflow and to provide flood

PRESENT AND FUTURE WATER USE

12 --.

E~0f3J1 WITHDRAWAL
_ DEPLETION

2.----

10------

8
....
w
w
w
w
'"
u 6
'"
z
0
:;
~
;;;
4

o

YEAR

Illustration 14

17
