NEWS RELEASE u.s. dep8rtr~~Jnt of the interior

~ national park service

~ Larry Quist (415) 556-5186
~

For Immediate Release Au--1- ,-z.--

FOUR ALTERNATIVES FOR COLORADO RIVER RUNNING PROPOSED BY PARK SERVICE

Four scheduling alternatives for river running---all of which permit use

of motorized craft --- are offered for public comment in a revised Colorado River

plan released by the National Park Service today.

The Draft Alternatives for the Colorado River Management Plan will be the subject

of five public hearings in July after which a final plan will be prepared, according

to Howard H. Chapman. Western Regional Director for the Park Service.

A five-year phase out of outboard motors in favor of oar propelled craft on

the 270-mile stretch of river was contained in a plan adopted by the Park Service

in 1979 but was subsequently vetoed by Congress last year.

The four alternative Grand Canyon National Park river running plans are:

A - Mixed motor and oar use all year.

B - Oar use only during the winter, from Oct. 16 to April 15.

C - Oar use only in the fall and early winter, from Oct. 1 to Jan. 1.

D - Three two-week periods set aside for the exclusive launching of oar

expeditions between April 16 and October 15.

Chapman noted that. the final plan, following the public review, may turn out

to be a combination of elements from several of the alternatives.

The number of persons allowed to use the river during the year would remain the

same as at present, although some seasonal changes would occur depending on which

plan is finally adopted.

Western Re ionalOffice 450 Golden Gate Avenue San Francisco, Galifornia 94102
