<br />The principal method by 11Thich pollution can be abated is by waste
<br />treatment. As amended, the Federal Ivater Pollution Control Act author-
<br />izes an appropTiation of $80 million for Fiscal Year 1962 and $90
<br />million for Fiscal Year 1963 for grants to municipal, intermunicipal,
<br />or interstate agencies for assistance in financing sewage treatment
<br />facilities construction. The purpose of this authorization is to
<br />accelerate construction of abatement works. Grants are made according
<br />to priorities established by the State Water Pollution Control agencies.
<br />These grants cannot exceed thirty percent of the project cost, or
<br />$600,000, ~IW.chever is the smaller. This f:L'1a.Ilcial assistance has been
<br />very effective in increasing the rate 'of installation of sewage treat-
<br />ment faoilities in the Hissouri Basin. A.llocations made for Fiscal
<br />Year 1962 for this activity total $11,077,400 distributed as follows:
