Introduction

In consonance with the Missouri Basin Inter-Agency purpose, the Corps
of Engineers is interested in coordinating its work with other agencies,
Federal, State, and Local Governmental entities who are interested in or
cooperating with such "ork. Many different procedures, of which this is
one, are used in effecting coordination. The brief mention of work
being done, given in the balance of this section of the report, is
intended only as a lead to others ',ho may be interested in coordinating
other programs with these undertaldngs by more detailed relationship.

The Corps of Engineers has responsibility for Federal water resource
development works for flood control, navigation, and multiple purpose
projects for these and related purposes. Projects included in this
program include dams and reservoirs, levees, channel improvement and
appurtenant works. Work involves investigation, planning,. construction,
operation and maintenance.

This report presents a brief, concise statement on the current status
of construction and planning and indicates the work to be undertaleen in
forthcoming fiscal years if funds are received. It shows possible
requirements for Fiscal Year 1964 for planning purposes only as inclusion
of funds for future years must necessarily be determined in the light of
overall Federal fiscal situation and policy as established by the
President,

During Fiscal Year 1962 considerable progress ~Tas made by the Corps of
Engineers in carrying forward the portion of the overall water resource
development program under their jurisdiction. During the year construc-
tion work was being carried on at five reservoirs in addition to the six
main stem reservoirs; the navigation and bank stabilization project; the
agricultural levees; and ten local protection projects. In addition,
planning work in advance of construction was going on for four reservoirs
and six local protection projects. During Fiscal Year 1962 the ottawa,
Kansas, project was essentially completed, bringing the total number of
local protection projects essentially completed to date to a total of
34 in the basin. In addition to the six reservoirs, Fort Randall,
Gavins Point, Harlan County, JCanopolis, Cherry Creek, and Cold Brook
Reservoirs which. have been essentially completed before, the power-
plants at Fort Peck and Garrison Ivere completed during the year, bring-
ing these reservoirs into an essentially completed condj.tion and, in
addition, work on the Tuttle Creek and Ponune de Terre Reservoirs of
Kansas and Missouri, respectively, was brought to essential completion.
In addition, initial power generation was started at Oahe Reservoir. A
brief description of progress on individual projects is given in the
follmr.ing paragraphs. For convenience this work i.s divided into areas
wherein the werle is closely associated.
