Salt-Gila Aqueduct
Planning in preliminary stages for 1986 start-up

L'j
C'I'?
N
~
c

.-

~

Moat potential users on the
Salt.Gila Aqueduct are in
the preliminary stages of
planning for the arrival of Colo-
rado River water in 1986.
Di8CU88ions have started on
sharing the cost of construction
of needed water-treatment plants
and distribution lines.
000
Mesa plans to build an $18 mil-
lion treatment plant adjacent to
the Salt-Gila Aqueduct east of
Bush Highway and north of
Brown Road.
Karl Kohlhoff, Mesa city engi-
neer, 88.id Chandler, Gilbert, Wil-
liams Air Force Base and the
Arizona Water Co., which serves
Apache Junction, have npresssd

interest in using the Meaa plant.
If ,that were to happen, Mesa
would have to add the capacity to
its plant to fit the needs of the
other communities and charge
them for proceasing the water.
Plans of private companies for
CAP water are uncertain.
o 0 0
The largest amount of CAP
Indian water - 173,100 acre-feet
a year - was allocated to the
Gila River Indian Reservation.
However, the Gila River Pima.
Maricopa Indian Community has
not yet signed a contract for the
water with the Department of the
Interior. Because the contract is
unsigned, the Bureau of Recla-
mation has not begun studies for

delivering the water to the reser-
vation.

o 0 0

Only one of five non.Indian
agricultural irrigation diatricta on
the Salt. Gila Aqueduct will re-
ceive Colorado River water by
1986.

The New Magma Irrigation
and Drainage District will receive
4.34 percent of the total water
made available for non.Indian
agriculture.

New Magma needs $21.9 mil-
lion to complete its distribution
sy&tem. Landowners in the 26,.
9OO-acre diatrict have approved
the ule of $6.4 million in general-
obligation bonds and an, addi-

Salt-Gila Aqueduct Allottees

CAP water allotments to cities. industries and Indians are expressed in annual acre.
feet.
