.

s~. Recre~tion~l ~nd Public He~lth Aspects

.

What provisions are being made to control the slime growths in this
water and thus provide an adequate oxy~en supply for the growth of fish
food organisms. Areas ~thout the proper balance of biochemical oxygen
demand are very likely to be a smelly nuisance rather than a place of
relaxation and joy.
With the lo~g, flat, mud beaches and undrainable pot-holes, which
would be created in the flood plain, this could be an insurmountable
problem and should definitely be provided for before activating any phase
of this entire project.
The constantly fluctuating shoreline, due to irrigation use and
flood control measures, is very conducive to the enhancement of many

different species of harmful mosquitos, which would be very undesirable

to the recreationalists in the area and also to the permanent residents

and municipalities in the area.

One of the prevalent species to the area is known to be the Culex

Tarsalis, which is a carrier for encephalitis, or sleeping sickness.

With the present Environmental Protection Agency pesticide controls and

restrictions, how are these pests to be dealt with?

In a time of short funds and food shortages in the world, we must

not create a recreational area at such high costs. It would seem a poor

move for state agencies to take on more responsibilities of managing and

policing, when some present areas are not adequately supervised and others

are being closed to public use.

.
