The contractor has beglUl work on housmg for con- <br />struction workers, on an access road from Dutch John to the dam <br />site, and on excavation of the diversion tunnel. <br />By JlUle 30, 1958, construction of an access road .from Linwood, <br />Utah, to Dutch John had been completed with the exception of the <br />blacktop surfacing. <br />Construction of streets, utilities, and residences at Dutch John, <br />located 2 miles from the dam site, was nearing completion. <br /> <br />Navajo storage unit <br />The contract for the construction of Navajo Dam was awarded on <br />June 26, 1958, to a combination of construction firms made up of <br />Morrison-Knudsen, Henry J. Kaiser, and F & S Contracting Co. for <br />$22,822,624. The contractors moved onto the job immediately and <br />started work on excavation in the spillway area and the opening of <br />borrow areas. <br />By June 30,1958, facilities at Navajo Camp, the field headquarters <br />for the construction of Navajo Dam, had been completed. <br />An access road to Navajo Camp and to the dam site has been com- <br />pleted. The road was constructed by the State of New Mexico <br />utilizing, in part, funds advanced by the Bureau of Reclamation. <br /> <br />Transmission division <br />During fiscal year 1958, preliminary steps have been taken in the <br />planning of a suitable transmission system for the Colorado River <br />storage project. <br />Reconnaissance surveys have been made to select a route for the <br />Glen Oanyon'Springville.section of the Glen Canyon-Flaming Gorge <br />interconnecting transmission line. <br />Network analyzer studies have been initiated to determine operat- <br />ing voltages, size and type of conductors, location of lines, and operat- <br />ing characteristics of the potential system. <br /> <br />Advance planning activities <br />Foundation drilling at the dam site and the testing of sources of <br />earth embankment and concrete aggregate materials constituted the <br />major activity during the year relative to the Curecanti unit. <br />By June 30, 1958, definit~ plan reports had been completed for the <br />Paonia project in Colorado and for the Verual unit of the central <br />Utah project in Utah. Definite plan reports were essentially com- <br />plete for the Hammond project in New Mexico and the Seedskadee <br />project in Wyoming. <br />Advance planning studies continued during the year on all other <br />authorized participating projects with the major emphasis on field <br />studies coincident with preparation of definite plan reports. <br /> <br />8. ALLOCATION OF FEDERAL INVESTMENT <br /> <br />Section 6 of Public Law A85 states that upon completion of each <br />unit, participating project, or separable feat.ure th~reof, .the Se?retary <br />shall allocate the total cO$ts of constructmg smd umt, project or <br />feature to the various purposes authorized in the act or authorized <br />under reclamation law.
