PI ANNI1"':

SUBJECT:

Animas-LaPlata Final Environmental Statement

Except for a few minor changes, Water and Power Resources Service has
done nothing to improve the quality of their DES and their responses
to most of our comments were not satisfactory. I feel it is very
important to resolve our differences as soon as possible and ~,e will
attempt to do this through interagency coordination.

We have established a viable trout fishery both above and below Durango
which is very important to the people and we will do everything we can
to preserve this resource. We still contend that an interagency study
of the Animas River involving \ITRS, FWS, DOW and New Mexico, is nec-
essary if this issue is to be resolved. Until this is done, we will
continue to support the Fish and Wildlife Service recommendation that
a minimum of 160 cfs be released below the Durango pumping plant.

DGS:js
cc: Jack Grieb
Bob Evans
Bob Rosette
Mike Zgainer
FWS, Salt Lake City

"

DEPARTMENT OF NATlfRAl RESOURCES, Harris Sherman,_ Executive Director' WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Michael Higbee, Chairman
Wilbur Redd"r Vke Chairm",p Sam C;jwiill, SeuetMY .
