<br />002991 <br /> <br />WATER QUALITY J;lELATED RESPONSIBILITIES <br />OF <br />THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO <br /> <br />The four agencies listed below exercise primary jurisdiction over <br />development of water resources and prevention of pollution of water in <br />the State" <br /> <br />New Mexico De~artment of Public Health <br /> <br />Authority <br /> <br />The New Mexico Department of Public Health is the official State <br />Water Pollution Control Authority for the purpose of coordinating <br />activities with the U.S, Public Health Service, under the provisions <br />of Public Law 660, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. <br /> <br />The Department is charged with the responsibility of seeing that <br />the public water supplies meet certain bacteriological and chemical <br />standards, that municipal and industrial wastes are properly treated <br />to prevent water pollution and is also responsible for a construction <br />program to provide safe water for rural unincorporated areaso <br /> <br />Authority for Department activities is provided for in the New <br />Mexico Statutes Annotated, 1953 Compilation, 12-14, and Laws of New <br />Mexico, 1957, Chapter 122. <br /> <br />Activities <br /> <br />Activities include field surveys, reports (with recommendations to <br />responsible officials),bacteriological and chemical analyses of water <br />supplies,and review of plans and specifications. <br /> <br />In addition, the Department cooperates with the U.S. Public Health <br />Service in the operation of water quality monitoring stations on the <br />Animas and San Juan Rivers. <br /> <br />New Mexico Oi.l Conservation Commission <br /> <br />Authorit;z <br /> <br />The powers of the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission relative <br />to pollution and contamination as contained in New Mexico Statutes An- <br />notated, 1953 Compilation, Chapter 65, Article 3, Section 65-3-11 <br />are as follows: <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />9 <br /> <br />.L, <br />
