RESERVOIRS AUTHORIZED OR UNDER CONSTRUCTION

1. KANOPOLIS PROJEcT.-The Ka.nopolis dam is located on the
S~oky Hill river approximately 26 miles sotithwest of Salina, Kan-
sas, in Ellsworth county.
The reservoir which IS primarily for flood control on the Smoky
Hill and Kansas rivers is a unit of the proposed plan of flood con-
trol recommended by the U.S. Army Engineers for the Kansas
basin. At this time there is under consideration a plan for utiliz-
ing a portion of the water stored in the project to irrigate approxi-
mately 40,000 acres of land in Ellsworth and Saline counties.
The total capacity of the reservoir at spillway elevation IS
432,000 ilCre-feet and will cover approximately 13,600 acres.
. Construction on this project was begun on June 's, 1940, and con-
tinued until operations were closed down by the W~'u Production
Board. The' project is estimated to be approximately 67 percent
completed.
2. HARLAN COUNTY PROJEcT.-Aithough this proposed multiple
purpose reservoir is located on the Republican river in Harlan
county, Nebraska, the benefits of flood control and irrigation to the
Kansas portion of the basin below the reservoir are such that it .
should be included in the general plan of water development for
Kansas. It is estimated that this reservoir will provide flood pro-
tection to 154,000 acres in the lower valley and would effect bene-
fits estimated to average $250,000 annually. The total capacity of
this reservoir is 1;199,000 acre-feet, of which 150,000 acre-feet will
be used for irrigation water for 26,000 acres of land in Nebraska
and 63,000 acres in Kansas.
. 3. TUTTLE CREEK RESERVOIR.- The proposed Tuttle Creek Reser-
voir is located on the Big Blue river. a few miles above Manhattan,
Kansas. This reservoir with a proposed capacity of 2,640,000 acre-
feet would provide protection to Manhattan from flood waters of
the Blue river and operating in conjunction with the Kanopolis and
Harlan County reservoirs, will provide a substantial degree of flood
protection to the lower Kansas river and vicinity of Kansas City.

RESERVOIR PROJECTS UNDER INVESTIGATION

1. KIRWIN PROJECT.-The Kirwin rese~voir .site is located in
Phillips county at the town of Kirwin on. the North Fork of the
Solomon river; The proposed storage capacity of 174,400 acre-feet
includes 54,400 ar.re-feet for irrigat.ion needs in Phillips, Smith arid
Osborne counties; 15,000 acre-feet silt reserve and 105,000 acre-feet
