<br />0521 <br /> <br />and commercial improvements, utilities, and public facilities, <br />At Sterling, local officials erected an emergency dike on the <br />railroad tracks to keep floodwaters out of a large residential <br />area. Advance warning of the arrival of the flood crest at <br />Sterling permitted evacuation of 50,000 head of cattle from <br />feedlots in the path of the flood. Similar actions reduced" flood <br />losses at other urban locations along the river, The lower South <br />Platte valley sustained $32,000,000 in damages from this flood. <br />Damages for the Lower South Platte River valley are itemized in <br />table 4. <br /> <br />Flood of May - June 1973 <br />Snowmelt runoff beginning about mid-April 1973 was augmented <br />by prolonged rainfall on 5-6 May to produce the flooding that <br />occurred in the South Platte River basin. The flooding was <br />characterized by high, sharp peaks from the rainfall runoff <br />followed Qy a gradual recession due to the extended'snowmelt <br />runoff. Consequently, the South Platte River continued to run <br />bankfull during most of May and into the month of June.
