.

SUMMARY SHEETS

LOCATION

The proposed features to be constructed for the Dirty Devil River
Unit would be located in Emery and Wayne Counties in south-central Utah
in the Upper Colorado River Basin.

PLAN

The unit would be designed to reduce the salinity of the Dirty
Devil and Colorado Rivers by collecting saline spring water in Hanksville
Salt Wash and Emery South Salt Wash and disposing of it by deep well
injection. Collection would be accomplished by pumping surface and
alluvial water from shallow wells. This water would be filtered and
chemically stabilized, after which it would be injected into a deeply
buried geologic formation, the Coconino Sandstone, where it would be
stored indefinitely, isolated from any fresh water aquifer now in use.
The injection, observation, and collection wells; powerlines; roads; and
the surface treatment facilities at both washes would be constructed and
be in operation within a 3-year period. The only alternative to the
recommended plan is no action.

.

To reduce adverse impacts on wildlife at Hanksville Salt Wash, eight
water precipitation collection and storage devices, referred to as guz-
zlers, would be installed for wildlife use. Since these guzzlers provide
minimal water supply, each would be fenced to prevent domestic livestock
use. These guzzlers would compensate for loss of water now available
for wildlife. Reclamation would fund and participate with State and
Federal wildlife agencies in a monitoring study to evaluate changes in
the riparian habitat caused by unit operation. Based on monitoring re-
sults, additional mitigation may be needed and could consist of fencing
as much as 2.5 miles of Muddy Creek from domestic livestock. This fenc-
ing would allow the habitat to improve for wildlife species.

EFFECTS ON THE COLORADO RIVER

Decrease in salt load (tons)
Annual reduction in flow (acre-feet)
Effect of reduction in salt load at
Imperial Dam (mg/L)

20,900
2,000

1.9

UNIT FEATURES

.

Shallow collection wells
Monitoring wells
Injection wells (4,000 to 5,000 feet deep)
Treatment and injection plants

002340

24
10
2
2

S-l
