<br />An agreement to undertake this review on a joint team basis wa~ <br />made on October 2, 1967. The study was to be completed in 9 months. Parti- <br />I-" cipation by the Federal sector is in line with the policy of advancing <br />00 de$alting and nuclear technology through application to new ~ituations <br />1'\:), having general interest and applicability elsewhere. <br />UJ <br /> <br />The team, consisting of a representative each from OSW, A~G and. <br />Division of Water Resources of the Department of Natural Resources (DWR), <br />undertook the study. The State provided basic input data on existing and <br />projected water, power and industrial requirements in the study area. The <br />OSW and AEC team members undertook the development of the basic desalting, <br />power and process steam costs. <br /> <br />A set of study ground rules to consider various alternative desalting <br />plans which would be useful to the State in developing its overall water <br />resources plan were agreed upon. Anticipated M&I power and industrial <br />process steam demands indicated the desirability of considering desalting <br />plant c~pacities of 50 ~o 100 million gallons a day (MGD), power demand <br />of 500 to 1000 MWe and process steam requirement of 0.67 to 1.33 million <br />po~nds per hour. Based on these needs, the team s~lected three basic plans <br />for study. These inclu4e: <br /> <br />A. A triple purpose plant utilizing the distillation process <br />located at Little Mountain, l2 miles west of Ogden, Utah, <br />on the shore of Great Salt Lake. The plant would include <br />a desalting~power-process steam production cQmplex utilizing <br />nuclear and fossil fuel energy sources. The multi-stage <br />flash (MSF) and vertical tube evaporator (VTE) distillation <br />processes were used. <br /> <br />B. ~ triPle purpose plant using the electrodialysis (ED) desalting <br />process together with a small distillation desalting (5 MGD) <br />unit. ~ multi-purpose complex consisting of the small 4isti1la- <br />tion desalting unit and power generation plants and process steam <br />production plants of the capacities mentioned above was considered <br />to be located at Little Mountain. The ED desalting plant would <br />be located at the mouth of the Jordan River west of Salt Lake City. <br /> <br />C. ~ single purpose desalting plant located at the mouth of the <br />Jordan River, using the ED process with power from a mine mouth <br />fossil fueled plant located in Carbon County, Utah. The desalting <br />and power capabilities are the same as above. <br /> <br />Feedwater salinities of 1000 parts per million (ppm), 2500 ppm and <br />4000 ppm total dissolved solids are used. Effluent brine from the desalting <br />plant is discharged direct to Great Salt Lake which forms a natural dis- <br />posal area. <br /> <br />-6- <br />
