o
r~' 01
l\J
W
00
W

'.

the streams.. In the past there has been a relatively small amount of such

disturbance in the upper reaches of the Colorado River watershed in Middle

Park.. Moreover:J the annu8.1 high spring runoff has been of sufficient

volume to carry away any temporary depositions of sediment in the stream..

As a result!) the Colorado River from Granby Dam to Krennnling has remained

clear and beautiful,\! -vn th a bed composed for the most part of gravel,9

rubbls,\! and boulderso
:11+.. Development 0 The first settlement on the Western Slope was made

at Breckenridge in 1860.. However,\! because of the Ute Indit'lil menillce, Middle

Park was not settled until 1874.. The title of the utes to lands in western

Colorado had been confirmed by a treAty TIn. th the United States Goverrnnent

in 1868.. In spite of that,\! by 1881 the influx of miners and cattlemen

brought about the removal of the Indians to reservations in utah, south-

western Colorado, and northwestern New Mexico..

150 Grand County.l' which embraces most of Middle Park,9 ha.s a resident

population of 3,904 personso Many of these are concentrated in the several

small towns which dot the Park.. Three of these lie between Granby Darn and

Krenunling, namelyg Granby.s Hot Sulphur Springs, and Parshall.l' with popula-

tions of' approxi.'Tlately 445.1' 257, Imd 41,\1 respectively" Fifteen miles north

of Granby is the village of Grand Lake.l' population 301.. Kremmling, located

near the western edge of the Park, has about 617 residents..

160 Irriga, tion. With settlement came irrigation.. Ear~ ditches were

small and constructed as chea.ply as possible.. That description holds true

at present for most of the developments for use of water in Middle Parko

17.. Larger and more complex are the eYisting transmountain diversions

which bring water to the Eastern Slopeo The Gr~nd River Ditch,\! constructed

in 1906 and enl!'\.rged in 19119 is still in operation.. It brings water from

..,5~
