There

are also existing and proposed demands for transmount:dn diversions to

supply municipal, agricultur~l, and industria.! uses..

11. Geology and Soils.. Hiddle Park is the southern portion of a

l~rger elliptical basin subdivided by the volcanic rocks of the Rabbit

Ears Range.. Before the last ice~age, this basin was filled with sedimentary

and volcanic rocks.. Alpine glaciation later formed limited and discontinuous

valley flats and terraces.. The present drainage system has cut deep valleys

in the volcanics and sediments of the basin floor...!!

""..'.

12. The flats along the Colorado River are covered by shallow, dark-

colored gravelly loams of alluvial origin, overlying water~soaked sands and

gravels 0 On the upper terraces, of which there are three distinct levels,

top soil is generally deeper and more suited to agriculture.. On these

upland benches, and also on the steep hillsides and ridges, grey~brown

podzolic soils hgve formed under a. vegetative cover domina.ted by lodgepole

pineo There are also large ~reas covered by soils consisting largely of

imperfectly weathered rock fragments with a cover dominated by sagebrush..

These latter soils a.re grouped as lithosols..

130 Underlying the topsoil are beds of varying thicknesses, composed

for the most part of glacia.l.$' sandy, grevelly, or rocky clays.. These. are

interbedded with occa.sional layers of gl~.cial silts silty loams, sands, or

gravels.. The whole structure is highly susceptible to erosion.. Any maj or

disturbance, as by overgrazing.\l careless logging.~ or construction activities,

usually results in accelerated erosion.\l bringing quanti ties of sediment into
=4-
