The Japanese Coal Development Corporation and ten <br />Japanese utilities are considering a trip to the United States in ~id-May, <br />which may include a briefing on AQUATRAIN in Denver. <br /> <br />(. <br />-." <br /> <br />4.0 SUBTEAM: FINANCIAL/ECONOMIC <br />4.1 APRIL EVENTS <br /> <br />Ernst & Whinney indicated willingness to provide financial analysis for the <br />project reconfiguration being prepared by Johnson. Hildahl of Ernst & Whinney <br />is performing conceptual work to learn if there are financial advantages in <br />funding salinity control activities through bonding which would be separate <br />from commodity transport bonding. If feasible, this approach could dispel <br />possible objections of users regarding devoting part of freight rates to <br />salinity control. <br /> <br />Williams and Clark met with an investor on April 19 regarding possible <br />financing. <br /> <br />4.2 ANTICIPATED MAY EVENTS <br /> <br />An operations budget for the remainder of 1984 will be established. <br /> <br />A business relationship will be developed with Ernst & Whinney for finan- <br />cial analyses services <br /> <br />5.0 SU8TEAM: TECHNICAL/ENGINEERING (Johnson) <br />5.1 APRIL EVENTS <br /> <br />Mitchell and Barfield of International Engineering Company met with Johnson on <br />April 16 to discuss the business basis for formalizing their relationship with <br />Aquatra in, Inc. <br /> <br />Johnson talked to a California engineering firm which has done significant <br />research on C02 markets. Indications are that major markets exist in <br />the Los Angeles Basin, Kern County, and the Santa Barbara Channel area. <br /> <br />Johnson learned that the Port of Los Angeles has reacted positively to the <br />possibility of a coal slurry pipeline. <br /> <br />5.2 ANTICIPATED MAY EVENTS <br /> <br />Work will be started on IOOdul ar confi guration of phys i ca 1 facil it i es for a <br />liquid C02/coal slurry optimization package. <br /> <br />A contract will be awarded for conceptual engineering and cost estimates for <br />viable projects. <br /> <br />3 <br />
