<br />Saving Thornber's Fishhook Cactus

<br />While studying the site of the
<br />Thcson CAP Water 1h:atment
<br />Plant, experts discovered a rare
<br />cactus that, until now, had been
<br />a candidate for the endangered
<br />species list. Thornber's Fishhook
<br />Cactus is a relatively fragile plant
<br />that botanists thought had been
<br />nearly eradicated in the Southwest.
<br />The cacti found on the site were
<br />taken to the University of Arizona
<br />
<br />Arid Lands Studies greenhouse
<br />where they were studied and suc-
<br />cessfully propagated.
<br />When the Treatment Plant is
<br />completed, the original sixty cactus
<br />salvaged from the site and over
<br />1,000 plants propagated from them
<br />will be returned to the area in
<br />which they were found. Their pro-
<br />gress will continue to be studied
<br />and monitored.
